Ever since Roman times they have been mining gold in Wales. However, the last Welsh gold mine closed it doors in 1999. Welsh gold is no different than gold mined anywhere else in the world. The reason it is now so expensive is a matter of rarity. It is so rare that stocks may well be exhausted very soon.
Where is Welsh Gold Found?
When it was being mined it could only be found in two small areas of Wales. One was in North Wales, very near to Snowdonia. There were several mines that stretched from Barthmouth, past Dolgellau and on to the mountains. The largest mines were the Gwynfynydd Gold Mine and the Clogau Gold Mine. The other area was in South Wales. It iis an area known to have been mined in Roman times and is located in a part of the River Cothi valley. Dolaucothi was the name of the mine, and it was donated to the National Trust in 1941. This mine is open to the public and allows visitors to explore the many interesting features of the site.
Today Welsh gold is expensive because it is rare. When it was still being mined it was expensive because the mining process was difficult and more complicated than in other places around the world. There were a number of reasons for this:
There was less gold to mine
Wages in the UK are higher

Welsh Gold and its Links With the Royal Family
Welsh gold was first linked with the Royal family in 1911. Prince Edward, who later became King Edward, was given the title of Prince of Wales. The ceremony took place at Caernarvon Castle on the edge of Snowdonia. Much of the regalia used by the Prince of Wales incorporates Welsh gold. Prince Charles was invested in 1969 at the same spot, and he wore the same regalia as King Edward. Welsh gold has also been used for many of the wedding rings for Royal couples. The Queen Mother began this tradition when she married the Duke of York in 1923.
When buying natural Welsh gold, look for a yellow colour. Much of the jewellery sold in the UK that is perceived to be Welsh gold is actually a mix. It is very rare to find it in its natural state.
